The Last English Revolutionary (1st Edition)

In 2001 I was shown an incredible archive in suitcases labelled ‘Prison’, ‘Communist Party’, ‘Spanish Civil War’, ‘Home Guard’. Based on the archive I wrote my first biography – of a revolutionary and soldier, politician and poet, writer and lover. Sutton Press published it in 2004.

'Hugh Purcell vividly evokes the times as well as the life of this dedicated agitator. Wintringham spoke for his generation; he was a prophet who should have honour in his land.’ Norman MacKenzie, The Guardian

'No one carried a greater charisma in those memorable days than Tom Wintringham. To my generation, his name re-creates a vision of beckoning symbols along the road to a New Jerusalem.’ Geoffrey Goodman, Tribune
